I love great authentic Mexican food, but I am always perplexed that the San Fernando Valley falls short. Thank goodness for Dos Arbolitos. It is a local treasure in the North Valley. This is one of my family’s regular haunts, both for dining in and take out. The prices are excellent. Jose, the owner, has a great number of authentic and subtly innovative dishes. He uses capers or olive oil in the beans, with some focus on food from Yucatan. The place is friendly, attractive with no frills, and has several booths that will hold parties of up to 12 people.
The menu goes on for five pages. Picking out favorites is difficult in this restaurant. My personal favorite is the enchiladas poblanas, which is chicken enchiladas in a fantastic, surprisingly complex, mole sauce. Other great items include costillitas en salsa de tomatillo (tiny bites of baby back ribs in a tangy sauce), and items with a pumpkin seed sauce. Of course, how could I not mention the incredible burritos? They are tasty, huge and well priced; most of them are only $5.99. Great burritos include the carnitas, barbacoa (barbeque beef), chili verde, and pollo. My wife, a vegetarian, frequently gets the chili relleno burrito. Simple things like their concha tostadas (five types to choose from) and the tortas (seven to choose from) are also excellent.
I also need to mention breakfast at Dos Arbolitos. The breakfast menu is small, available all day, and the coffee is made with cinnamon sticks. My favorites include the chilaquiles and the huevos a la mexicana (scrambled eggs with chopped chilies) served with beans, rice and tortillas.
